14:00-14:30 Hyunsun Tae (Senior Curator, Leeum) "Horizon of Collective Art Making"
There was no such thing as not-tough time for young artists. For those who have no power base yet in the art world, one of the most realistic ways to have a voice is a 'collective' action. After a few began to emerge during the 2000s, artists' groups called 'collectives' became a remarkable phenomenon in Korean around 2010. They are active in the art scene through lateral alliance and association. This talk will give an overview of different art collectives in Korea as a litmus test for what young artists are faced with.
14:30-15:00 Hanseung Ryu (Curator, MMCA) "Changing Art Environment and Artists’ Maneuvers - Division of Generations and Their Characteristics”
The art environment is always in a state of flux, and accordingly the artist's ways of thinking and making are also changing. The velocity of changes seems particularly striking in Korea. By the reaction and response of young Korean artists in their thirties to the changes, they can be divided into two groups: those in their early thirties and the others. I will be looking into their works and practices.
15:15-15:45 Yunkyoung Kim (Curator, Atelier Hermes) "The Frustrated Future"
There is so-called the '880,000-won' generation of artists. The diagnosis seems that they have to live without much expectation for the future, to accept a winner-take-all game rule, and to internalize frustration before learning how to cherish a hope. In their works, they do either shout or recede into the inner self; or they just keep murmuring what is meaningless, nonsensical, insignificant and make it more so by simply repeating it; and even it is hard to find any expression, argument or statement. What realities are young Korean artists living out?
